Minnesota cardio expert, coastal pediatrician, dermatology resident join UMMC faculty

Medical Center leadership is proud to announce the following additions to its faculty and leadership staff.

Yingjie Chen, Ph.D.

Dr. Yingjie Chen, associate professor of cardiovascular medicine at the University of Minnesota, has joined the Medical Center faculty as a professor of physiology and biophysics.

After receiving his medical degree from Neimonggu Medical College, People’s Republic of China, in 1986 and his M.S. from the National Res Institute of Sports Science, China, in 1991, Chen served as an assistant professor of physiology and as an associate professor of physiology from 1991-93 and as interim and associate director of the Physiology Department from 1993-95 at the Chinese National Research Institute of Sports Science.

He earned his Ph.D. in 1999 and had postdoctoral fellowship training from 1991-2001 at the University of Minnesota, where he joined the faculty and worked his way up from a research assistant professor in the Cardiology Division from 2001-03 to an assistant professor from 2003-05 to a tenure track assistant professor from 2005-12 to, ultimately, an associate professor with tenure from 2012-19. He also served as an adjunct professor at the Heart and Lung Institute, Tongji University, Shanghai, China, from 2016-19.

A Fellow of the American Physiology Society, Chen is an active member of several professional organizations, including the American Heart Association, and was a founding member of the Academy of Cardiovascular Research Excellence. He is the author or coauthor of 94 articles in peer-reviewed professional publications, serves as a reviewer for several scientific journals and is on the scientific advisory boards for numerous international conferences. He has obtained several grants from the National Institutes of Health, the American Heart Association and other organizations for his ongoing cardiovascular research, and is the holder of two patents for cardiovascular treatment methods.

 

Chelsea S. Mockbee, M.D.

Dr. Chelsea S. Mockbee, recently a dermatology resident at UMMC, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of dermatology.

Mockbee is a graduate of the University of Mississippi School of Medicine. Following medical school, she completed one year of training in pathology at Duke University Hospital before returning to UMMC to complete a residency in internal medicine followed by a dermatology residency. She served as chief resident for dermatology from 2018-19 and received the Robert S. Caldwell, M.D. Award for UMMC’s top resident in May 2019.

Mockbee is certified by the American Board of Dermatology and has a special interest in allergic contact dermatitis and patch testing. She also will be practicing general dermatology, complex medical dermatology, cosmetics and surgical dermatology.

 

Kelly E. Nation, M.D.

Dr. Kelly E. Nation, a staff pediatrician at Merit Health Biloxi and Ocean Springs Hospital, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of pediatrics.

After receiving her B.S. in biology from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1999, Nation served as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army from 2000-02 and served in the U.S. Air Force from 2002-16, obtaining the ranks of captain in 2004 and of major in 2010. She earned her M.D. at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in 2004, then had a pediatrics internship at Travis Medical Center, Travis Air Force Base, California, from 2004-05 and a pediatrics residency at the University of California Davis Hospital, Sacramento, from 2005-07.

Nation served as a staff pediatrician at the Tyndall Air Force Pediatrics Clinic from 2007-12, at Keesler Medical Center from 2012-16, and at Ocean Springs Hospital and Merit Health Biloxi from 2016-19. She served as Keesler pediatric outpatient medical director from 2014-16 and as director of pediatric clinical clerkships from 2013-16.
